Abbreviation of sniper rifle, also known as (high) precision-rifle, originally used to refer to the users of such weapon. This weapons primary use is to ensure accurate and long range deliveries of bullets to (often) unsuspecting miners.
History
Past snipers were mostly conventional combustion based firearms with mounted telescopes and various add-ons. The maximum effective ranges of these weapons depended on the cartridges used and ranged between 600m and 2,600m. Use of these weapons was limited to military groups and law enforcement.
The sniper used today is no longer comparable to the past weapon. Apart from size and restrictions being lifted, the mechanics of the weapon are completely different. It is widely accepted that while the basic technology of all current weapons was known since before WWII, the official development of the sniper started near the end of the time period now known as "Multi-Polar Superpower Ages".
- 2008 - The USA officially starts development of railgun technology for use on aircraft carriers and larger destroyers. This project was launched in order to create ultra-high velocity weapons which did not rely on conventional propulsion methods using gunpowder or gas.
- 2012 - First succesful test of railgun firing a 5kg solid metal bullet
- 2015 - China publishes results of previously unknown program developing a new type of railgun. Developed in order to handle the ongoing strive for power between China, Russia and the other Asian nations, the main improvement of this new railgun is that it nearly completely annihilates the wear and tear caused by the extreme heat caused by friction.
- 2016 - USA builds first small nuclear battleship with 2 railguns, utilizing a similar design as the Chinese experimental railguns it is sent to improve US Army presence in the Middle East.
- February 2019 Russian scientists develop high efficiency nuclear reactor which allows for the use of small scale nuclear fusion reactions to power small to medium sized cities.
- July 2019 EU joined military forces develop first long range railgun using the new russian reactor, thereby improving the power and usability.
- 2021 - China finishes railgun space cannon which they from then on use to shoot packages of materials up in space to use for building the Chinese Space Station. Estimated is that the station finished 2 years early thanks to this.
- August 2027 - USA introduces large bore railguns for extreme range railguns which allow for ranges up to 10.000m
- November 2028 - NATO categorizes large bore railguns as snipers (further refered to as such) and standardizes ammunition types for the railguns which are still in use today as High Velocity Ammo.
- 2031 - China develops SAPHEI ammunition for snipers
- 2032 - CSS installs 4 snipers with SAPHEI ammunition, officially to protect the station from "asteroids"
- 2047 - EAC introduces quickly interchangeable component weapons, enabling small ships to utilize most weaponry that was too complex or heavy until then.
- 2071 - Omnicorp develops EMP ammunition to allow for long distance electronics shutdown
- 2072 - BioChemical ammunition is widely available trough black markets, production is soon started in the Russian Industrial Sector.
